Herring is a subspecies of clupeids. It features fewer vertebrae than Atlantic herring. Baltic Herring can be 20 cm (sometimes, up to 37 cm) long, weight – up to 76 grams.
Baltic herring’s habitat is the Baltic sea, to the East of Denmark Straight, it inhabits in water of lower salinity, sometimes it habits in fresh water lakes in Sweden. Baltic herring is a main commercial fish caught in the Baltic sea, which makes approx. half of the yield harvested in this region.
Differently from herring, Baltic herring is less fatty. The Europeans make much of its taste and use Baltic herring for cooking smoked, fried and canned produce. In Sweden and Finland Baltic herring is the national dish, and Holland annually celebrates а festival of this tasty and useful fish.
Similar to any other seafood, Baltic herring contains essential amino acids and Omega-3 fatty acids, that fight high blood cholesterol, preventing atherosclerotic changes in blood vessels. Use of Omega-3 fatty acids with food (human organism is not capable to produce such substances) promotes work of cardiovascular system (mitigating risk of heart attack and heart failure), normalizes blood pressure, alleviates inflammatory conditions of abathrosis, improves vision, promotes more successful brain function. In addition, Omega-3 fatty acids are excellent antioxidants, which improve immune resistance, excrete free radicals and other poisonous substances.
